Akron Soul Train is an artist residency program connecting and empowering the community and artists by granting residencies that provide resources for all creative disciplines, thereby fostering a more vibrant downtown Akron.
We are working with artist, Katie Butler, a painter hailing from Akron, Ohio, who specializes in allegorical still life creations that offer incisive commentary on American politics. Her paintings present tableaus featuring meat, seafood, and elegant china juxtaposed with commonplace gingham tablecloths, serving as a visual critique of the disparity between the affluent, privileged figures in power and the ordinary citizens they purport to represent. Using the dinner table as a metaphorical stage for political theater, Butler highlights the superficiality of "bread and butter issues" at the heart of political campaigns.
As part of Katie's community engagement programs, we are hosting drawing and artist talk programs that double as food donation drives on June 29 from 2 - 4 pm and July 20 from 5:30 - 7 pm.
Please consider joining us by participating in a program or making an online monetary donation. Every dollar donated can provide three nourishing meals! As more families in our community struggle to make ends meet, we hope we can count on your support.
Hunger impacts 1 in 9 people and 1 in 8 children in our community. Last year, the Foodbank served a record number of people; 3 million visits were made to its hunger-relief network. Let's ensure families have a place to turn in their time of need. Together, we can help offer hope to our neighbors.
Thank for you for visiting our fundraising page and for supporting the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
